Morning commuters will want to pay attention to changing traffic patterns on Big Horn Avenue.
City of Cody crews are a month away from finishing a HAWK signal at the intersection of Big Horn Avenue and Freedom Street. The project is meant to protect Cody Middle School students as they cross busy Big Horn Avenue on their way to school.
“This is an effort to make that intersection safer for young people going to Cody Middle School,” WYDOT Senior Public Relations Specialist Cody Beers said. “We’re excited about it — it’s been a long time coming.”
The new crosswalk grew out of a study that followed an October 2020 meeting among officials from the city of Cody, the Wyoming Department of Transportation and Park County School District 6. Then school board trustee Stephanie Bell was a major advocate for the crosswalk and played a key role in speeding up its construction, Beers recalled.
Once the crosswalk is finished, Beers said, drivers can expect more law enforcement in the area to make sure they’re following the new traffic pattern.
“I’m sure if (law enforcement officers) see the need to educate or write on some carbon paper, they will,” Beers joked.
WYDOT has partnered with the city of Cody and the school district on an educational campaign to teach students how to use the pedestrian-activated signal.
