Shooting in Lovell Leaves Victim in Critical Condition; Shooter in Custody

A Sunday morning shooting was reported in Lovell, resulting in a victim with multiple gunshot wounds and a suspect in custody.

Lovell Police Department Chief of Police Dan Laffin detailed the Lovell PD’s Facebook page. At the time of their release, the investigation was ongoing and names were not available.

In the early morning hours of Dec. 20 – shortly after midnight of Dec. 19 – the Lovell Police Department received a 911 call. The caller reported a shooting and a victim wounded by multiple gunshots at the 400 block of Nevada Avenue.

According to the Lovell PD’s report, multiple shots were fired and struck the victim at close range. The shooter fled the scene of the crime before law enforcement arrived.

Several agencies, including the Park County Sheriff’s Office, the Cody Police Department, the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol, responded to the call.  The victim was initially treated by medical staff from North Big Horn Hospital, before being life-flighted to Billings for emergency treatment.

As of Sunday evening, the victim is stable but in critical condition at an undisclosed Billings hospital.

The shooter has been arrested and already faces multiple felony charges. More charges could be added as the Lovell PD’s investigation continues.

Chief Laffin praised the interagency cooperation with all the responding officers.

“Several agencies provided exceptional support to the Lovell Police Department to ensure this assailant was captured,” Laffin said on Facebook. “The exceptional teamwork and coordination led to the suspect’s arrest within hours of the incident.”

Laffin also assured Lovell residents that there is no active threat to the community – the shooter and the victim were known to each other.

This is a developing situation. More details will be added as information becomes available.
