Wyoming has made a top 5 list for the entire country. But that’s not a good thing.
A new survey may help some motorists decide which roads across the nation to stay off to avoid bad-behaved drivers behind the wheel.
In recent findings published by Forbes Advisor, researchers analyzed nearly two dozen behaviors to learn which states had the worst drivers across the country.
The 19 behaviors included reasons like texting while driving, cutting off other motorists, eating while driving and even putting on makeup while behind the wheel.
Wyoming drivers came in No. 4 on the list and ranks No. 1 in the following categories:
- Eating while driving (45%)
- Texting while driving (24%)
- Putting on makeup/getting ready while driving (6%)
“Wyoming drivers spend a lot of time in their vehicles. Wyoming drivers drive on-average drive 18,999 miles per capita per year, [which is] tops in the nation. The 2023 national average for vehicle miles traveled per capita is 9,930 miles, says Cody Beers, Public Relations Specialist for the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT).
“Because of spending so much time in their vehicles, Wyoming drivers do eat in their vehicles,” added Beers.
One of our biggest issues in Wyoming for drivers remains the lack of seat belt use and drinking and driving, and fatigued driving. WYDOT says they’ve seen an uptick, also, in motorcycle fatalities in 2024.
Motorists in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee exhibited the best driving behavior, while Oregon and New Mexico drivers are included in the top five states with the worst drivers.
Topping this list: Hawaii. The Aloha State has the worst drivers in the nation with a large number of motorists running red lights, changing lanes, or turning without signaling and speeding 20 mph or more over the limit.
