In what officials are calling an ‘assassination attempt‘ on former president Donald Trump, Wyoming lawmakers are reacting to what happened in Pennsylvania that left the shooter and a rally-goer dead.
“Today, the nation witnessed a horrifying assassination attempt on President Trump. America is grateful for the quick action of the Secret Service and local law enforcement. I’m praying for the victims and their families. Donald Trump is a warrior and will not be intimidated by this cowardly attack,” said senior Senator John Barrasso, (R-WY), in a media release.
In what law enforcement officials are calling “an assassination attempt,” an attempted gunman opened fire at a Trump rally outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon. The attempt injured the former president and causing secret service to rush him off the stage once the threat was neutralized.
Junior Senator Cynthia Lummis, (R-WY), said, “I am horrified by the attempted assassination that took place at today’s Trump rally. I am relieved President Trump’s injuries are minor, but my heart breaks for the person who was killed and those who were injured. I am eternally grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement who acted quickly to neutralize the suspect and prevent greater tragedy. Political violence has no place in this country.”
Not many details are known about the shooter, who was shot and killed by the Secret Service, so said the agency. Another member of the audience was also killed.
Trump, who raised his right hand in defiance, and holding the side of his face as he was swarmed by Secret Service agents, was rushed to the hospital, said he was “fine.” Video during the incident showed blood flowing from around his right ear.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” Trump wrote on social media soon after the attempt. “Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!””
Law enforcement officials have told multiple news outlets have said the shooting is being investigated as an assassination attempt.
“President Trump, his family and the families of the victims of today’s shooting are in our prayers. We are thankful for the professional and quick response of the Secret Service. This is truly a sad day for our Republic, and should serve as a wake-up call for all Americans to express disagreement without resorting to violence,” said Governor Mark Gordon in a media release.
As Secret Service agents determined it was prudent to get Trump offstage and get him medical help, Trump was heard saying, “Let me get my shoes!” as agents swarmed over his body to protect him.
“A deranged individual has shot the former and future President of the United States. Join me in praying for President Trump’s safety and recovery,” Wyoming Representative Harriet Hageman posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement that a suspect had fired “toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue.” Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger similarly said on CNN that the suspected shooter “was outside the grounds.” Officials did not release the identity or motivation of the suspected shooter Saturday. The FBI is leading the investigation.
