Wildlife Habitat Management Areas to Open for Spring

Five wildlife habitat management areas will soon be open for the year.

Wyoming Game and Fish maintains these areas to give big game a safe, unaffected range to weather out the winter, but all species benefit from the lack of human incursion. In winter, these areas are closed to stop stress-inducing disturbances. Now that winter has passed, these areas will be open for human exploration. Nevertheless, caution must always be taken. Many of the wintering elk, mule deer, and other wildlife residing on the ranges will have newborn youngster in tow.

Sunlight Wildlife Habitat Management Area, near Cody, will be open to human presence at 8 am on May 1st. The following area open on June 1st at 8 am:

  • Medicine Lodge WHMA near Hyattville, which will be open to foot access and fishing  The upper portion of Renner WHMA near Hyattville. The lower portion is open year-round.
  • Sunshine WHMA near Meeteetse   It is open to foot and horse traffic, but is closed to all motor vehicles year-round. This site will remain open while big game seasons are open.

All of these areas will be closed by the end of December, if not earlier. Users are reminded to stay on designated travel routes, obey all signs and camp in designated areas where required. If roads become too wet due to spring moisture, users are asked to try and avoid traveling those roads to reduce resource damage.
