Weather Delays Two-Day Concrete Pour on Sheridan Avenue

Winter weather has caused another delay on Sheridan Avenue, as construction workers are hoping and waiting for the ongoing project to start going downhill.

WYDOT announced that the Sheridan Avenue rehabilitation project had encountered another delay. Due to the week’s winter weather, the massive concrete pour planned for this week has been postponed.

2021 has dealt several delays to WYDOT and S&S Builders, the primary contractor for the project. Phase 3 – Alger to Stampede – was set to begin on Feb. 16. After multiple days of subzero temperatures, construction began a full two weeks later, on March 1.

The new dates for the concrete pour are Monday, March 29, and Tuesday, March 30 – depending on the weather.

The overall scope of the concrete pour hasn’t changed, despite the setbacks. Next week, 500 cubic yards of concrete will be poured down 17th Street on Greybull Hill. Over 50 trucks of concrete will be required for the massive pour.

Pouring will begin at the top of the hill on Stampede Avenue. Gravity will be doing a lot of work as the wet concrete slowly moves down the hill.

A single lane will be open to traffic on Greybull Hill, and delays are expected. Flaggers will be guiding vehicles thru the one open lane throughout both days.

WYDOT Public Relations Specialist Cody Beers says delays on 17th Street will be long during the concrete pour. He recommends Cody drivers seek alternative routes – Heart Mountain Street and South Fork Avenue – for at least the next two days.

The $4.93 million Sheridan Avenue project (#CodyImprovements) includes removing and replacing existing damaged concrete slabs, resealing existing concrete joints, grinding and texturing the existing roadway, upgrading Americans with Disabilities requirements at every street corner between 10th Street and Stampede Avenue, replacing broken curb and gutter and sidewalk, and upgrading wiring at traffic signals.

Phase 3 of the project is proceeding from 14th Street up Greybull Hill to the project’s end. All work must be completed through concrete grinding and texturing before June 15, 2021.

Construction will be shut down from June 16 through Aug. 23. If necessary, Phase 4 of the project requires all remaining work to be completed by Sept. 30.

A $200 thousand bonus is promised to S&S Builders should they finish everything by the Phase 3 deadline, June 15. And, as Beers puts it, “they want that bonus.”

Weekly updates continue to be held every Tuesday at 9 a.m. Their new location is the northwest corner of 17th and Central Avenue.
