Warrior Wrestlers Finish Weekend Strong

 

The Worland Warrior Wrestling team started their season this weekend in Cody. Friday afternoon The Warriors would face the Cody Broncs in their first dual of the 2020-2021 season. The 106 pound weight class would be a forfeit all weekend for the Warriors. The State of Wyoming’s number one ranked wrestler at 106 pounds was in quarantine this week. Anthony Martinez will be out for the Battle in the Big Horns as well. Worland beat Cody 54-19 with 9 falls by the Warrior Wrestlers.

Worland would then face pre-season number one ranked Wyoming 4A Natrona County

With 7 falls by the Warriors. Worland would beat the Mustangs Friday 42-36. Kobe Swain, Aaron Carver, Top Ranked Luke Goncalves, Josh Rose, Lane McBee, and Christian Peterson would all have pins in their second dual of the day.

Facing a top ranked Wyoming 4A squad in the Sheridan Broncs that have 8 wrestlers ranked in the top three in their weight class including 3 ranked number one. Worland  would find their third dual of Friday to be difficult. The Warriors would lose the dual 63-18 the match would also include a rare pin of Luke Goncalves by Colson Coon. Goncalves had a 10 point lead and lost position that Coon would not give up. Colson scored the 6 point fall against Goncalves. Ross Goncalves, Kein Anderson and Aaron Carver were able to win their matches against Sheridan by fall.

Saturday the Warrior grapplers traveled to Powell in which was scheduled to be three additional duals. Worland would face Natrona County and Sheridan again, but the Riverton Wolverines opted to wrestle in Cody due to a late withdraw By the Buffalo Wrestling team.

A rematch with Natrona County wouldn’t go in favor of the Warriors. The Mustangs beat Worland 55-24. Aaron Carver would have his first loss on the season. Several Warriors would lose by fall to the Mustangs.

Luke Goncalves was able to face Colson Coon again and get the win, but the Warriors would lose their second dual to Sheridan. 43-32 in what Coach Josh Garcia called “A way better showing.” The 182 pound weight class has been put on notice by Warrior Lane McBee who pinned Wyoming 4A number one ranked Brook Steel. Overall on the weekend Worland would go 2-3. They faced great competition and showed well. Well enough that Star Valley will now be added to the Battle in the Big Horns this up coming weekend here in Worland.

Teams scheduled to wrestle in the Battle in the Big Horns are: Sheridan, Riverton, Lander, New Castle, Glenrock, Thermopolis, Lovell, Greybull, Pinedale, and now defending Wyoming 3A State Champions; Star Valley. Mandatory Masks are in effect and 100 spectator maximum per match, but do yourself a favor and get down to one of the two venues (Worland Middle School and Worland High School) for the amazing event.
