BECK LAKE

Whether you are new to hiking or looking for something a little more challenging, Beck Lake offers a network of a dozen hiking trails for all levels. From a leisurely stroll around the lake to an adventurous 2-3 hour excursion, Beck Lake has the perfect trail for you.

Markham Reservoir and New Cody Reservoir are two smaller lakes that offer an easy, flat, paved .7 mile walking trail that offers beautiful waterfront views. You can take the loop as many times as you would like or simply take in a short stroll.

If you have time and are looking from something more challenging, there is the 3-mile eastern loop and the 6-mile outer loop that covers the “Red Light District” which is a ridge line trail that allows you to take in the views of Cody, the Big Horn Basin and the surrounding mountain ranges. The trails at Beck Lake are great for kids and dogs too with benches along the trails for breaks if needed.

CEDAR MOUNTAIN

Only 10 minutes from Cody, Cedar Mountain offers you the ability to hike a mountain and take in the amazing city views. These trails are perfect for moderate to experienced hikers, as the terrain is rough and rocky.

The moderate trails are up well established 4×4 Jeep roads and they allow you to go as far back as you would like. The public land route is about 2 miles long. Many like to venture beyond on a private road another 3 miles to the false summit where several of the Big Horn Basin Media towers reside. Another mile down the road is the true Cedar Mountain summit with jaw dropping, 360º views.

If the more experienced hiker is looking for a well-travelled, beautiful trail then the trail slightly south (left) of the jeep road parking area is perfect. This trail is parallel to the road trail and offers more ridges, more scenery, and gets you to the same public access 2-mile destination. It is important to note that this often-travelled trail is on private land, so please use at your own discretion.
