Sports Updates Around the Big Horn Basin

THE WORLAND WARRIORS HAVE THEIR NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, AS PATRICK SWEENEY, AN ALUM, IS TAKING OVER THE PROGRAM.

SWEENEY SERVED AS A VOLUNTEER AND PAID ASSISTANT UNDER FORMER HEAD COACH RYAN UTTERBACK. HIS FOCUS WAS ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL, ACCORDING TO WORLAND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MARK MORTIMER.

SWEENEY PLAYED COLLEGE FOOTBALL AT DICKINSON STATE (ND) AND SERVED AS A GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH AT NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY (SD) IN 2016 AND 2017.

MORTIMER TOLD WYOPREPS, “PATRICK IS MOTIVATED TO BUILD ON A STRING OF WARRIOR PLAYOFF APPEARANCES. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PRODUCT THAT PATRICK AND HIS STAFF PUT ON THE FIELD THIS FALL.”

WORLAND WAS 10-17 IN THREE SEASONS WITH UTTERBACK AS HEAD COACH. THE WARRIORS HAVE MADE THE CLASS 3A PLAYOFFS EACH OF THE LAST THREE SEASONS. UTTERBACK STEPPED DOWN AT THE END OF THE 2019 SEASON. WORLAND WAS 3-6 LAST FALL WITH ALL OF THEIR LOSSES TO PLAYOFF TEAMS, INCLUDING A PAIR TO CODY AND ONE TO 3A RUNNER-UP POWELL.

UTTERBACK WILL BE STAYING WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL STAFF, ACCORDING TO MORTIMER.

 

KAYLA KOLPITCKE, A VERSATILE ATHLETE FROM POWELL WILL BE GOING TO MARIAN UNIVERSITY IN FOND DU LAC, WISCONSON TO PLAY HOCKEY AND SOCCER. KOLPITCKE HAS BEEN A GOALIE IN HOCKEY FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS AND PLAYED ON THE PARK COUNTY U19 TEAM THAT WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE 5TH YEAR IN A ROW. SHE HAD A SAVE PERCENTAGE OF .937 FOR THE ICE CATS IN THEIR LATEST CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON.

KOLPITCKE IS AN ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMER IN SOCCER FOR THE PANTHERS AND ALSO RAN IN THE 3A STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEET ALL 4 YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL. SHE FINISHED 15TH AS A FRESHMAN, 5TH AS A SOPHOMORE, 12TH AS A JUNIOR, AND 16TH AS A SENIOR.

MARIAN UNIVERSITY IN FOND DU LAC IS A DIVISION III SCHOOL AND THE SABRES WERE 4-19-2 THIS PAST SEASON.

 

THE WESTERN WYOMING COMMUNITY COLLEGE MUSTANGS ARE ADDING GREYBULL’S PAYTEN SORENSON TO THEIR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ROSTER.

SORENSEN SIGNED HER NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT AND WILL BE HEADED TO ROCK SPRINGS IN THE FALL.

SHE WAS A THREE-YEAR STARTER FOR THE BUFFS AND HEAD COACH JEFF HUNT.

SORENSEN WAS CHOSEN ALL-STATE FOR THE 2019-20 SEASON FOR GREYBULL. SHE’S A TWO-TIME ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREE. SORENSEN LED THE BUFFS HER SENIOR YEAR WITH AN AVERAGE OF 10.4 POINTS, THREE STEALS, AND TWO ASSISTS PER GAME. SHE WAS A STARTER ON THE GREYBULL TEAMS THAT PRODUCED 20-PLUS WINS TWO SEASONS IN A ROW. THE BUFFS WENT 20-8 IN 2019 AND FINISHED 20-5 IN 2018. THE 2019 SQUAD LOST IN THE CONSOLATION FINAL AT THE 2A STATE TOURNAMENT.

THE WESTERN WYOMING WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM WAS 3-26 DURING THE 2019-20 NJCAA SEASON.

 

AFTER EIGHT SEASONS, JEFF HUNT HAS STEPPED DOWN AS THE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL COACH WITH THE GREYBULL BUFFS.

HUNT TOLD WYOPREPS HIS DECISION WAS BASED ON PERSONAL REASONS, INCLUDING A DESIRE TO WATCH HIS KIDS PLAY AS THEY GET OLDER.

HUNT HAD AN OVERALL RECORD OF 114-93 IN HIS TENURE. THAT INCLUDED THREE STATE TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES AND A PAIR OF 20-WIN SEASONS. THE BUFFS WENT 10-13 DURING THE 2019-20 SEASON.

HUNT COACHED PLAYERS THAT RECEIVED EIGHT ALL-STATE AWARDS HANDED OUT BY THE WYOMING COACHES ASSOCIATION, INCLUDING TWO-TIME ALL-STATE SELECTIONS KENDALL WRIGHT AND KY SORENSEN.

THE SEARCH FOR A REPLACEMENT IS UNDERWAY.

 

THE NORTHWEST COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL TEAM HAS INKED THEIR LATEST IN STATE RECRUIT AS EMMA TEICHERT, OF COKEVILLE, HAS ELECTED TO PLAY VOLLEYBALL FOR THE TRAPPERS.

SHE IS A 2-TIME ALL-STATE PICK AS THE PANTHERS HAS WON THREE STRAIGHT STATE TITLES IN 1A. IN BASKETBALL, TEICHERT IS ALSO A 2-TIME ALL-STATE SELECTION AVERAGING 8 POINTS AND 3 REBOUNDS PER GAME AS THE PANTHERS IN 2019-20.

SHE IS ONE OF THE MOST DECORATED TRACK ATHLETES IN STATE HISTORY WITH 3 ALL-STATE DESIGNATIONS TO HER CREDIT. IN 2019, SHE WAS THE 1A STATE CHAMPION IN THE 100-METER HURDLES AND 300 HURDLES. SHE ALSO RAN ON THE PANTHERS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP 4X400 RELAY TEAM AND TOOK 3RD PLACE IN THE 800-METER RUN.

IN 2018, SHE WON THE 1A STATE TITLE IN THE 300 HURDLES, PLACED 2ND IN THE 100 HURDLES, 2ND IN THE 800, AND ONCE AGAIN RAN ON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RELAY TEAM IN THE 4X400 EVENT.
