Shoshone National Forest: Think of First Responders Before Hiking

Shoshone National Forest has an important request before your next excursion into the woods.

Last week, all campgrounds and cabins in Shoshone National Forest were closed until at least April 30th – yet another public health measure taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This is following a general discouragement from the top – the US Forest Service – which is encouraging safe and responsible use of public lands. That means discouraging certain aspects of outdoor recreation at this time.

The trails in the forest, however, remain open and will naturally be an attractive option for Cody residents looking to get out of their homes for some social distancing in nature. But they asked that anyone planning to go hiking or any other activity in the Forest consider something before heading out: the safety of first responders. Despite medical supplies and services being stretched thin due to the COVID-19 response, first responders will always respond, no matter where or when. If you get injured in the Forest, they’re coming to get you.

If you decide to explore Shoshone National Forest, do so responsibly and sensibly. Don’t take any risks or endanger yourself and others. Because, just like with the coronavirus, it won’t be just yourself that you’re placing at risk.
