Yellowstone opens, and Shoshone National Forest along with it.
While trails and the Forest itself haven’t entirely closed during the pandemic, Forest officials will begin opening 16 campgrounds and other developed recreation sites by May 22nd – so yes, you will be able to reserve a spot for your Memorial Day weekend adventure. The fire restrictions enacted by Forest officials will remain in place until this Wednesday, May 20th – so hold off on the s’mores until the weekend.
Forest Supervisor Lisa Timchak implores the Cody community and any Wyoming residents who are planning a visit to do so responsibly. Quote “There is still work to be done prior to opening these developed recreation sites. Our employees need to ensure the cleanliness of facilities, conduct proper maintenance, and assess recreation areas for health and safety. We cannot thank our local communities enough for their continued understanding throughout this trying time for us all.” Unquote.
Make sure to maintain social distancing at all campsites, facilities and other services, and avoid large gatherings are much as possible. Also, bear in mind that some bathrooms – like those at certain trailheads – may still be inaccessible at this time. Plan accordingly.
