Former Northwest College professor Dennis Brophy was killed after being struck by a vehicle last Wednesday, September 23.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol reports the incident occurred at 2:53 PM. A Toyota Camry was attempting to make a right turn onto E. Coulter Avenue near Rimrock Tire. Brophy was walking on the sidewalk.
The driver did not see Brophy walking in front of the vehicle when they pulled out. Brophy was struck and then caught underneath the vehicle.
Another passerby started honking their horn to alert the Camry’s driver. The driver then exited the Camry, looked around, and failed to notice Brophy trapped under their vehicle. They proceeded to continue driving. After driving a short distance, the driver finally stopped completely.
Brophy died as a result of this incident. He was 75 years old.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol’s report lists “driver inattention” as the contributing factor to this tragedy. The driver of the Toyota Camry was not injured.
Dennis Brophy had been a psychology professor at Northwest College for nearly 25 years. He retired at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. He was also a clergyman and religious education consultant Montana-Northern Wyoming Conference United Church of Christ.
This was the 96th traffic fatality to date in Wyoming, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
