As we prepare for another great year in Yellowstone National Park, which officially opens May 7th, let’s take a look at one of the wonders of the park.
One of the majestic sites that proclaim the arrival of spring in Yellowstone quite like a bison calf. The calves, which are nicknamed “red dogs” have been increasing in number in Yellowstone as the calving season gets into full swing. At birth, they weigh in at roughly 100 pounds but once the calves are fully grown they could be up to eight feet tall, 15 feet long, and up to 3500 pounds.
By late summer their fur will turn brown like their mothers’. Once the park opens on May 7th take the opportunity to venture into the park and keep your eyes peeled for the red dogs or bison calves. Check out more about Yellowstone park and enjoy your visit.
