THE NORTHWEST COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM BEGAN REGION IX PLAY LAST WEEKEND AND AFTER THREE GAMES CURRENTLY SIT AT 1-2 IN THE DIVISION AFTER PICKING UP THE WIN VS. WESTERN WYOMING ON WEDNESDAY. FOR THE LADY TRAPPERS, THEIR OVERALL RECORD SITS AT 10-9. WITH MORE DIVISION PLAY UPCOMING SATURDAY I TALKED WITH HEAD COACH CAMDEN LEVETT ON WHAT AREAS OF THE FLOOR THIS TEAM IS LOOKING TO IMPROVE ON.
“WE’VE JUST GOT TO SIT DOWN AND GUARD SOMEBODY. I’M NOT A BIG BELIEVER IN ZONE DEFENSE. THEY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY MAN-TO-MAN, THEY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO TALK THROUGH BALL SCREENS, DRIBBLE HAND-OFFS, ALL THAT. THAT’S WHAT WE NEED TO WORK ON AND WE NEED TO DO A BETTER JOB OF PICKING UP AND EXECUTING THAT. THAT’S ONE THING WE’VE BEEN FOCUSING ON. FOCUSING ON OUR DEFENSE AND HOPEFULLY OUR DEFENSE WILL LEAD TO SOME EASY BUCKETS ON THE OTHER END OFFENSIVELY.”
OFFENSIVELY, COACH LEVETT HAS BEEN PRETTY PLEASED WITH HOW THINGS ARE GOING, THEY HAVE TWO GIRLS AVERAGING OVER 10 POINTS A GAME BUT SAYS THEIR IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.
“RIGHT NOW WE HAVE TWO OF THE TOP EIGHT LEADING SCORERS IN THE REGION. WE’VE GOT TWO YOUNG LADIES THAT ARE DOING A GREAT JOB OFFENSIVELY. LCCC REALLY TOOK AWAY ONE OF OUR SCORERS, OUR POINT GUARD AND THEN WE RELIED ON THE OTHER ONE TO SCORE ALL THE POINTS. REALLY, AS A TEAM I THINK WE NEED TO COLLECTIVELY FIND OUR THIRD AND FOURTH LEADING SCORER, START FEEDING THEM A LITTLE MORE AND TAKING THE PRESSURE OFF OUR TWO LEADING SCORERS.”
FOLLOWING THE WIN WEDNESDAY VS. WESTERN WYOMING THE LADY TRAPPERS WILL LOOK TO ADD TO THE WIN TOTAL AS THEY’LL BE ON THE ROAD SATURDAY TO TAKE ON GILLETTE COLLEGE. GILLETTE SPORTS A 16-2 OVERALL RECORD AND IS 2-0 IN LEAGUE PLAY. COACH LEVETT PREVIEWS THAT MATCH-UP AND TALKS ABOUT AND THE TEAM WILL PREPARE GOING ON THE ROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LEAGUE PLAY.
“FRIDAY MORNING WE’LL HAVE A PRACTICE AND THEN WE’LL TAKE OFF FRIDAY AFTERNOON. SATURDAY MORNING WE’LL HAVE A SHOOT-AROUND, WATCH SOME FILM AT THE HOTEL AND GET READY FOR GILLETTE. I KNOW THEY’RE A CONFERENCE TEAM, THEY’VE GOT AN INTERNATIONAL YOUNG LADY WHO’S LEADING OUR REGION IN POINTS PER GAME. SHE’S PLAYING AT A HIGH LEVEL.”
AS FOR A GROUP OF GIRLS COACH LEVETT WOULD LIKE TO SEE TAKE ANOTHER STEP IN THEIR PROGRESSION ITS THE LADIES DOWN LOW.
“I WOULD SAY OUR POST PLAYERS. WE’VE GOT SOME VERY TALENTED POST PLAYERS. SOPHOMORE IN LILY HENRY. WE’VE GOT FRESHMAN LUCY TUIGAMALA AND RILEY AIONO BOTH OUT OF UTAH. WE’VE JUST GOT TO DO A BETTER JOB OF GETTING THEM THE BALL AND THEY HAVE TO DO A BETTER JOB OF FINISHING FOR US.”
BOTH THE NORTHWEST COLLEGE BASKETBALL TEAM MAKES THE TRIP OVER TO GILLETTE SATURDAY FOR A ROAD CONTEST AGAINST GILLETTE COLLEGE. WOMEN TIP-OFF AT 2PM WITH THE MEN TO FOLLOW AT 4PM.
