It’s been quite the adventure for the Northwest College Women’s basketball team as they make the trek to La Junta Colorado for the Region IX tournament. Their bus broke down, they had to change course but have it all figured out and arrived in Pueblo just in time to get ready for the tournament contest vs. Otero Junior College. Are the Lady Trappers fazed, not one bit. The teams in high spirits and just wants to play basketball. After advancing through their play-in game Head Coach Cam Levett continues to praise this team and says there’s plenty more in the tank for NWC women’s hoops.
“You know, before that game at home we had, we were on a four game skid. So to get over that hump was huge for us. Yeah, just overall in general I think our sophomore leadership, they want to play more basketball for Northwest and keep representing Park County. So it was good that they were ready to play and played hard. 45 minutes is hard fought basketball.
The Lady Trappers will be squaring off against a relatively unknown team in the first round, Otero Junior Collegee. Coach Levett on the match-up.
“Over the weekend I watched a lot of Otero. They’re a very talented team. Obviously, theyre hosting the tournament. They’ve got some really good players. They like to press, they like to play 2-3 zone and they really push the ball in transition. I think we match up well against them. We don’t have a lot of common opponents but on paper we’re pretty similar teams. So I think it comes down to those sophomore leaders and how bad they want to play again on Friday.
As for what coach Levett is looking for out of his team, it’s all about executing.
Well against a 2-3 zone, like they play, you’ve just got to make shots. Being on the road I think us getting a shoot-around is going to be huge but really it’s just going to come down to who can get those stops and who can put the ball in the hole. I think we’re ready for the challenge. Yeah, that’s what it comes down to. Playoff basketball. Who’s going to make the shots.”
And look for Northwest’s All-Region performers, Samiyah Worrell, Sydney Prather and Riley Aiono to lead the way.
They need to be leaders, they need to play well for us and show the south why they’re All-Region North honors. Again, I think they’re going to step up. They’re going to play their best basketball. We’re healthy. So we’re ready to go.”
The Northwest College Women’s basketball team faces-off with Otero Junior College in the first round of the Region IX Tournament tonight at 5:30pm. It’s a single elimination tournament. For a link to watch the game live and for my full interview with Coach Levett check out our website.
