WITH THE WINTER SPORTS SEASON RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER MANY HIGH SCHOOL’S ARE PREPPING FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE SEASONS.
WHILE THE MAJORITY OF TEAMS BEGIN THEIR WINTER SPORTS SEASONS MONDAY THEIR IS ONE SPORT IN WYOMING THAT HAS ALREADY BEGUN PRACTICING: NORDIC SKIING. FOR CODY HIGH SCHOOL, THIS IS A YOUNG GROUP CONSISTING OF FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF FIRST YEAR HEAD COACH MEGGIN BECKER THEY WILL LOOK TO IMPROVE UPON THEIR STATE FINISH FROM A YEAR AGO. COACH BECKER TALKS ABOUT HER EARLY SEASON EXPECTATIONS.
“THE BIGGEST EMPHASIS I HAVE IS ONE, FIGURING OUT EACH ATHLETES UNIQUE PERSONALITY AND WHAT THEY CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM. AND HOW WE CAN UTILIZE THAT TO EXPONENTIALLY BENEFIT US AS A TEAM, AS WELL AS AN INDIVIDUAL.”
AS FOR WHAT THE SKI TEAMS PRACTICE LOOKS LIKE COACH BECKER GIVES AN INSIGHT INTO HOW THIS TEAM IS GOING ABOUT THEIR TRAINING IN THE FIRST WEEK.
“RIGHT NOW WE’RE FOCUSING A LOT ON BALANCE, GOOD WEIGHT TRANSFER, GOOD SHIFTING, BEING AWARE OF WHERE OUR HIPS ARE, FALLING FORWARD. ONCE WE GET ON SNOW, HOW TO FALL CORRECTLY AND HOW TO AVOID FALLS HOPEFULLY. AND THEN ALSO UTILIZING A LOT OF FUN. THEN ONCE WE HAVE A GOOD FOUNDATION AND GOOD BASE AND GOOD UNDERSTANDING WE’LL START QUICKENING THE PACE AND BEING ABLE TO TURN OVER THAT IN A GOOD TIME.”
BEING A PART OF THE NORDIC SKI TEAM IS UNLIKE MANY AS COACH BECKER ADDS WHAT SEPARATES THIS SPORT FROM MANY OTHERS FROM THE COMMUNITY TO THE SPORTSMANSHIP DISPLAYED.
“IT’S NEAT TO SEE THAT, HOW WELL ABSORBED AND HOW GREAT OF SPORTSMANSHIP, I MEAN THEY’RE ALWAYS OUT THERE CHEERING EACH OTHER ON WHETHER THEY’RE ON CODY OR CASPER OR JACKSON. THEY’RE THERE TO SUPPORT EVERYBODY ELSE. IT’S A LIFETIME SPORT THAT CAN BE ENJOYED AT ANY LEVEL, WHETHER IT’S A BEGINNER OR WHETHER IT’S AT A COMPETITIVE, HIGH COMPETITIVE LEVEL.”
THE CODY BRONCS AND FILLIES NORDIC SKI TEAMS WILL PARTICIPATE IN THEIR FIRST 5K SKATE DECEMBER 6TH IN CASPER. STAY TUNED TO THE BIG HORN RADIO NETWORK FOR A PREVIEW OF ALL CODY HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS TEAMS.
