As reported last week, Nic Talich is headed to Laramie as a preferred walk-on to play football for the pokes.
As a broadcaster, I only had the privilege of broadcasting Nic as an athlete for this last football and basketball season, but in that short time, I got to witness firsthand how great of an athlete and person Talich is.
The Cowboys are getting a good one and of course, some of that is from Talich’s dedication to his craft, but it’s also because Cody has been good to him. When asked what he will remember most from Cody and the community it was just that: The community.
“The people, and the coaches, I mean they have all been so awesome. Obviously, the community has been awesome. I mean really everything has been so great in Cody. I wouldn’t change it for anything… It’s everything I have ever wanted so I am really lucky and blessed about that.”
Being a footballer is in Talich’s blood as his dad still holds the record for the Cowpokes for third-most tackles in program history, but head coach Matt McFadden was a huge part of Talichs progress as well on and off the field.
“Mcfadden is obviously the best coach I have ever had and I think the best coach in the state. But the one thing I think he does really well is making you worry about life and becoming a man than about football… His big emphasis is turning boys into men and I think that that’s something I will really take from him and strive to be like him someday.”
In any sport, the colors you wear represent so much. The town or city, the community, your friends and family, and your heart as an athlete. Talich doesn’t take any of that lightly as he prepares to put on the brown and gold.
“Putting on that brown and gold, that’s the whole state. Everything Wyoming stands for, just being cowboy tough. I think that’s something I have always wanted to do and it’s really humbling and honoring that I get to do that now.”
Talich has been gaining some weight in preparation for camp as he also already has a workout plan that he has been doing for the Cowboys.
