Nic Talich has received two Defensive Player of the year awards for his play on the gridiron this last season. Earlier in the off-season he was named the 3A West DPOY. Over the weekend it was announced Talich was named the Casper Star-Tribune Super 25 DPOY, in addition to making first team. The Super 25 honors the best high school football players in Wyoming, regardless of class or position. Not a bad way to cap off a stellar career that also saw him win a State Football Championship. I was able to catch up with Talich to talk to him about the Super 25 DPOY and first team honor. Talich on what it means to receive that accolade.
“You know, it’s pretty cool cause I mean, it’s not just our team that’s recognized, it’s other schools and other coaches. So that’s really cool to get even looked at like that. Cody (Phillips) touched on it. I mean, we couldn’t have done it without the coaches and the players around me putting me in spots to make plays and luckily I did make some plays. And that was a pretty sweet year.”
Talich was a force on defense, finishing the season with 254 points and averaged 23.1 defensive points per game, third in the state among all classifications. He had 128 tackles, seven for a loss and two sacks. He also picked off four passes, returning one for a touchdown and recovered a fumble. Nic talks about the consistent work paying dividends.
“You know, I mean, I think that was kind of just all season. We were just really consistent. I mean, we had one game in Star Valley that we kind of, I don’t know if we’d call it a fluke, but we didn’t play well. They played better than us that game. All, every game it was just the consistency that I’ve never like been a part of a team where just every game we showed up to play.”
What’s next for Nic after High School? He says he is going to play college football, just not sure where yet. Right now he says he’s taking his time and living in the moment.
“I try not to rush things. There’s some schools that wanted me to commit here on this last signing day and I’m just kind of taking it slow. It’s kind of crazy to think about college for me right now. It’s just December. I mean, it’s for four years so. It’s just kind of taking it slow. We’ll decide here in the next couple of months.”
And Nic goes on to reflect, once again, on the season that was for the Cody Broncs on the football field, battling through immense adversity and what he’ll remember most.
Oh man. I think going down to Jackson and beating on their home by what, 50? That was pretty cool. That was pretty awesome to do. Then obviously winning that state championship with my team, my brother and my dad, that was pretty memorable too.”
Nic is one of four Broncs that earned Super 25 honors. He along with fellow teammate Keaton Stone were first team, Johnny Williams was second team and Cody Phillips earned third team honors.
