A sudden, explosive fire has already claimed over 2000 acres west of Cody – and it was only discovered yesterday afternoon.
The Fishhawk Fire was reported Monday about 40 miles west of Cody. When it was first discovered, the fire, which is located six miles south of U.S. Highway 14/16/20, was estimated to be just over 500 acres. But erratic, gusty winds rapidly increased the fire’s area, consuming 2000 acres as of 8:30 yesterday evening and expanding into the head of Sheep Creek.
A Shoshone National Forest engine and Park County Fire resources were the first to respond to the fire yesterday, but additional resources are being ordered. Fire managers will be able to report more details after a meeting this morning.
Due to smoke cover, aerial resources are having difficulty flying in the area.
The Shoshone National Forest has closed the Fishhawk Trail, Kitty Creek Trail, and the Blackwater Trail for public safety and to allow for firefighting operations.
A public meeting for the Fishhawk Fire will be held at Yellowstone Valley Inn on the North Fork Highway at 6pm this evening.
