WITH THE REGULAR SEASON COMING TO A CLOSE THE CODY FILLIES VOLLEYBALL TEAM IS STILL IN SEARCH OF THEIR FIRST CONFERENCE WIN. WHILE THE FILLIES DO HAVE A WINNING RECORD ON THE SEASON AT 15-12, A WIN IN LEAGUE PLAY WOULD GO A LONG WAY FOR CONFIDENCE AND A BOOST IN MOMENTUM AS THE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT IS JUST A WEEK AWAY. WITH RIVERTON NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE HEAD COACH STEPHANIE BIRCH SHARES HER THOUGHTS ON THE UPCOMING CONTEST.
“WELL OUR LAST GAME IS AGAINST RIVERTON AND WE’VE HAD A PRETTY GOOD RIVALRY WITH THEM THE PAST FOUR YEARS. IT’S ALWAYS A GREAT MATCH BETWEEN THEM AND US. THE GIRLS ARE READY FOR IT. THEY FEEL LIKE WE MATCH UP WELL AGAINST THEM. THEY ARE A LOT OLDER THAN US. I THINK THEY (RIVERTON) START, FOR SURE, 4-5 SENIORS BUT WE LIKE OUR CHANCES IF WE WORK HARD. THAT’S WHAT OUR FOCUS IS THIS WEEK.”
AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON MANY TEAMS HAVE THEIR SCHEMES SET IN STONE AND THAT IS NO DIFFERENT FOR THE FILLIES. COACH BIRCH ADDS WHAT SHE’S LOOKING FOR FROM HER PLAYERS FROM A PREPARATION STANDPOINT.
“OUR EFFORT IS OUR FOCUS THIS WEEK. WE HAVE TO WORK HARD. WHEN WE WORK HARD GOOD THINGS HAPPEN FOR US. WE JUST NEED TO CONSISTENTLY PULL BIGGER STRETCHES OF WHERE WE WORK HARD, WHERE WE DON’T GET DISCOURAGED, WHERE WE DON’T GET TO FAR BEHIND IN GAMES AND JUST TO KEEP WORKING HARD. SO THAT’S OUR FOCUS, IS JUST OUR EFFORT.”
THE LAST TIME CODY WENT UP AGAINST RIVERTON THE LADY WOLVERINES CAME AWAY WITH THE VICTORY 3 GAMES TO 0. COACH BIRCH ON THE ADJUSTMENTS THE FILLIES HAVE MADE THE SECOND TIME AROUND.
“THEY HAVE FOR SURE TWO REALLY GOOD HITTERS AND FOR US TO BE ABLE TO EXPOSE THEM, WE HAVE TO SERVE THEM TOUGH. IF WE SERVE THEM TOUGH THEN THEY CAN’T DO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO. THEY LIKE TO RUN A LOT OF QUICK SETS AND IF WE MAKE THEM PASS OUT OF SYSTEM THEN THEY CAN’T RUN THOSE SETS AND THEY BECOME A LOT MORE PREDICTABLE WHICH HELPS OUR BLOCKERS AND OUR DEFENSE.”
IT’S THE FINAL GAME OF THE REGULAR SEASON FOR THE CODY FILLIES VOLLEYBALL TEAM. THEY TAKE ON RIVERTON FOR SENIOR NIGHT SATURDAY WITH GAME-TIME SCHEDULED FOR 1 IN THE AFTERNOON.
