Donations Sought for School Staff’s Firearms Training

A new Cody nonprofit is hoping to raise money in support of firearms training for school employees.

Bill Tallen, retired federal law enforcement officer, and Woody Wilkerson, Park Six Sentinels board member, discussed the group Wednesday morning on KODI’s “Speak Your Piece with Darian Dudrick.”

The goal of the Sentinels, a 501(c)(3), is to cover the expenses for school employees during their second year of firearms training and beyond.

The Cody School Board first approved Policy CKA in April 2018 and again during a two-year review in 2020. The rule allows any district employee – except bus drivers – to carry a concealed firearm on school property only after he or she passes a background check, psychological exam and rigorous firearms training, and then is approved by the board.

Annual firearms training is required, but only the initial training is covered by Park County School District No. 6. That led to the formation of the Sentinels, which plans on having fundraisers and soon will have a Facebook page.

Anyone wanting to donate should call Sentinels board member Bryan Edwards, 250-2253.
