Cody Woman Killed in Truck Rollover East of Town

A Cody resident dies in a fatal rollover.

The incident occurred early this past Monday, July 13th. At 5:15 am, Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to milepost 63 on US 14/16/20 just east of Cody. A 2002 Ford Ranger was traveling eastward on the highway when it exited the right side of the road and hut a delineator post. The driver attempted and successfully got back onto the road, but it believed the driver overcorrected the turn and left the road again on the right side. That’s when it overturned.

The driver was 48-year-old Cody resident Kema Jamal. At the time of the rollover, she was not wearing a seatbelt, and tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crash. There is no definitive reason why this crash occurred. Fatigue and impairment are both being investigated as possible contributing factors.

This is the 50th fatality on Wyoming’s roadways in 2020 compared to 87 in 2019, 54 in 2018, and 75 in 2017 to date. While still lower than in many recent years, late June and July have seen a noticeable uptick in the number of fatal crashes throughout the state. 2020’s 51t fatal crash occurred on Tuesday in Pinedale, when a 2007 Ford F-150 collided head-on with a 2006 Ford Mustang.  The Mustang’s driver, 62-year-old Colorado resident Gerald I. Fagerhaug, died at the scene despite wearing a seat belt. The other driver is still hospitalized.
