A couple of weeks ago the Cody Fillies played in the first High School Softball game in Wyoming’s history. Just a few weeks later the Fillies are set to play in their first ever home game. It’s been a season full of first for the Fillies and that will continue this weekend when they welcome Green River and Rock Springs to town. The inaugural season for Filly Softball opened with a win and now with the team set for their home debut I caught up with their three captains and head coach to discuss the season and more. Sophomore captain and first basemen Morgan Evans on what it means to be a part of Cody’s inaugural team.
“It’s just really good to know that we can represent our school. Like most of us, a lot of us have played travel ball, which is great too but we just get to represent Cody High School now. Which is fun.”
The surrealness of the situation still lingers for Filly Softball. And while it’s great to be in their first season Junior Captain and utility player Emily Egger says they must stay focused on the bigger picture.
“I think we just have to realize, we’re here to play softball. It is crazy and super exciting but we’re here to win and we’re here to play. So that’s about it.”
Softball in Wyoming is an all-class sport, 13 teams and Ally Schroeder, their senior captain and short stop, goes on to talk about how every game matters.
“It kind of lights a fire under you, knowing that, like I said, you don’t really have that much room for error. Obviously, you’re going to win some and lose some but you just really want to give it your all each game.
And head coach Chad Smith calls this weekend’s home opener extremely exciting.
“It’s interesting because most of the parents or the other adults that have had anything to do with Cody Softball whether it’s Cody Pride or our Cody Girls Softball Association, or just playing recreational softball in the summer… Those people seem to be more excited than the players and that’s fantastic. We need that support, obviously.”
This weekend is the home opener for Cody Fillies Softball. They play Green River Friday at 3pm. On Saturday they host Rock Springs for a 10am contest. All games will be played at East Sheridan Softball Complex. Also, make sure to bring your appetites as Sloppy Joe’s will be served along with a 50/50 raffles to help fund-raise. All proceeds go to the team.
