Cody Regional Health CEO Doug McMillian is recognized for his career making Cody Regional Health one of the best rural hospital systems in the nation.
2023 has been a year of national recognition for Cody, being voted the Best Small Western Town and one of the Best Small Towns in the United States by USA Today. Now, another significant accolade has been bestowed on an essential person leading an essential service.
Becker’s Hospital Review published a list of the 80 Rural Hospital Leaders to Know for 2023. And Doug McMillan. CEO of Cody Regional Health has the distinction of making the list.
Becker’s Hospital Review is a medical industry trade magazine that does its own research, supplementing this with government-released data and U.S. News & World Report rankings. The impactful publication covers the medical industry through the lenses of every person involved: doctors, hospitals, patients, and the general public.
“The executives featured on this list have put their heart and soul into ensuring their communities have access to the best healthcare services possible,” the website post reads, “While rural hospitals across the country have faced closure in recent years, these leaders have developed a model for not only surviving, but thriving.”
Doug McMillan has been with Cody Regional Health for 26 years and has been a rural hospital CEO for nearly 40 years.
McMillian started his career as CEO at age 23 in 1984 in Haxtun Hospital District in Colorado. Previously, he served as CEO at Community Hospital in Torrington and Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, Montana, before relocating to Cody.
Since McMillian became the leader of Cody Regional Health, the hospital system has grown significantly. A rural hospital with 20 active staff and an annual revenue of $20 million has become a health system with 60 active medical staff and an annual revenue of $100 million.
Under his leadership, Cody Regional Health’s leadership team received the American Hospital Association Rural Health Leadership team award in 2020.
The list highlights how Cody Regional Health has achieved outstanding clinical outcomes. Amongst those are patient satisfaction rates of more than 92 percent and a wound healing rate of at least 92 percent within 28 median days to heal.
Becker’s Hospital Review recognizes the importance of rural hospitals, but they are only as good as a dedicated and connected CEO – and the magazine recognizes McMillian as one of the best in the nation.
“Rural hospitals are critical to the success of the U.S. healthcare system to expand access to care in remote areas. CEOs at the helm of these important community institutions have many responsibilities to make sure their hospitals thrive.”
