Cody Public Art Committee Asks Locals for Artistic Opinions

Buffalo Bill Bench at Irma Hotel

If you know what kind of art you want to see bedazzling Sheridan Avenue, the Cody Public Art Committee has a simple survey for your artistic opinions.

Since being founded in February 2019, the Cody Public Art Committee has been actively trying to add to Cody’s natural western beauty by highlighting its artisan community.

The committee’s mission is to bring public art to Cody that “connects us all to the West’s enduring spirit.” By installing public pieces on Cody’s streets, the committee promotes Western art and local artists.

You’ve already seen the committee’s work in town.

Several bronze sculptures have already been installed, mainly in and around downtown:

  • Harry Jackson’s “Sor Companna” near the Cody Bandshell in City Park.
  • Kelsey’s “High n’ Dry” in Bell Plaza.
  • Vic Payne’s “Buffalo Bill Bench” in front of the Irma Hotel.

Volunteers and donations make the work of the committee and their installations possible. The purchase, installation, and maintenance of current and future art pieces are possible through community generosity. No Cody taxpayer money goes to the committee.

The committee’s work is already making its impact. USA Today included Cody as a candidate for the nation’s Best Small Town Art Scene during a Reader’s Choice 2021 poll.

The reasons cited for Cody’s nomination were numerous local artists and studios, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and the annual Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale. Voting ended on April 26, with results to be announced on Friday, May 7.

To ensure the community has input on community art, the Cody Public Art Committee has created a survey for residents to provide their opinions.

The questions are simple and mostly multiple choice.

  • Where would you like to see more public art in Cody?
  • What type of art speaks to you?
  • What types of public art currently on view around Cody would you like to see more of?

Any type or preference of art is welcome, whether that be murals, sculptures, or interactive displays – like the musical installation at City Park. The goal is for Cody’s public art to reflect the desires of those who call Cody home.
