Cody Football Hosts Evanston for Homecoming

Following their monstrous win over Powell in the Big Horn Brawl the Cody Bronc Football team gets set for another emotional night as tonight’s homecoming. The Broncs will be going up against a 1-3 Evanston squad in their second conference game of the season. This week’s key word for the Broncs is focus. Avoiding a let down performance coming off the big win from last week and channeling the right mindset with homecoming festivities all around you. Head Coach of the Broncs Matt McFadden talks about that balance in preparation for tonight.

I think every football coach everywhere dreads homecoming because there’s so much going on and turn-around and your starting defensive ends dressed up like a rabbit one day at school or something. Kids have been really focussed. They’ve done a good job. They’re still High School kids, like you gotta enjoy that stuff, the memories and all that. But also you gotta flip the switch and when you come on the field and you put the pads on, now it’s go time, you know?

Coach sasy homecoming is not very fun if you lose the game and what did Cody work on this week at practice to avoid a let down…?

“Well it was a lot of details. I think offensively a lot of our mesh mechanics and our angles, gotta improve on those. There’s some plays to be had that we left out there we felt like whether it was missing a throw or missing a gap and offensively just being more consistent on those drives. Defensively, same type of thing. Just the details. Going back to tackling, going back to gap control. Discipline on defense for sure and then just the little details on offense.”

The play on the field between the lines will have a different look as Cody’s defense will have a tough task stopping the Evanston offense. The Red Devils run a scheme that you rarely see at the High School level..

Flex bone triple option. We don’t see a lot of that. They’re the only team on our schedule that does that. So it’s difficult to get ready for it, it’s difficult in a week. You know, really just a few days to get ready for it. Our defense has done a great job against the run all year. This will be a big test cause now it’s just not sheer force and sheer effort going head-to-head like it was last week. This is going to be more disciplined football.”

And just how is Cody getting ready to stop the triple option? It all starts with discipline.

“You know for us it’s keeping it simple. It’s having just enough change-ups and curveballs in there that they don’t know what we’re doing. Then just keys and just repetitions and keys over and over and over. Doing drills without balls, doing drills with tennis balls, doing drills, finally with footballs. So we don’t want the kids looking for the ball, we just want them focused on their keys and then playing fast.”

Conference season for Cody Bronc Football continues tonight as they welcome Evanston into Spike Vannoy Stadium for homecoming. Mac Morey and I will have all the play-by-play action live for you on KODI AM 1400 and 96.7 FM. Pre-game at 6:40, kick-off at 7pm.
