The Cody basketball teams were in Riverton over the weekend taking part in the Class 4A Regional basketball tournament.
The Cody Fillies have advanced to State and will be the No. 3 seed out of the West.
The Fillies got all the action underway in Riverton last Thursday and would come away with a 51-36 victory, over Rock Springs, to punch their ticket to the state tournament. This will be the Fillies first State tournament berth since 2018 and the first time they’ve advanced to the 4A State tournament since 2004.
Vs. Rock Springs the Fillies would use a 14-4 second quarter to pave the way for victory. The Fillies led 28-11 at the half and while the second half was evenly played Cody would hang on for the 51-36 win.
The Fillies would advance to the Quadrant final later that day where they were matched-up with Natrona county, with a chance to play for the West’s one seed and regional championship. Natrona used a big second quarter, outsourcing Cody, 20-9 and led at the half, 35-19.
The Fillies would battle back in the second half and were able to outscore Natrona by nine but in the end the other Fillies were too much, defeating Cody 56-49.
Following their loss to Natrona, Cody was then matched-up with Star Valley, on Saturday, in a contest to determine the No. 3 seed for State.
Saturday’s game between the Fillies and Lady Braves turned out to be the game of the season for Cody. Not only did the Fillies win the game but that victory snapped a 12-game losing streak to Star Valley. The Fillies came away with the 51-43 victory.
A game that would feature the second meeting between these teams was a back-and-forth affair all morning as the two teams battled it out. Picking things up in the fourth quarter, the Fillies would enter the final frame trailing by three, 28-25.
Kennedi Niemann would drop in the Fillies second three of the ball game in that fourth quarter which proved to be a turning point in the game. Just a few minutes later, it was Niemann making plays once again getting back-to-back steals on the full court press and converting those into four points. The Fillies were 11-13 in the fourth quarter from the free throw line and outscored Star Valley by 11 in the quarter to earn the No. 3 seed for State.
Molly Hays led the way for the Fillies dropping 39 points over the three games. Torrie Schutzman added 35 while Kennedi Niemann had 28.
Up Next: the Cody Fillies will take part in the Class 4A State basketball tournament March 12th and 13th in Casper. The Fillies open up the tourney Friday the 12th, taking on Thunder Basin at 10:30 in the morning, inside Casper College.
As for the Cody Broncs. Alan Martinez returned to the line-up for Rock Springs and helped lead the Tigers past Cody for the 32-26 victory, ending the Broncs season.
Two weeks removed from a win against the Tigers, Cody would only manage one first quarter point and trailed at the half 17-10. The Broncs would battle back and tie the game in the third quarter but Rock Springs proved to be too much in the end, outsourcing the Broncs in the final frame by seven for the win.
Cody Phillips would find his range from deep, dropping in two made three’s and finished with eight points.
