THE WYOMING AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL SEASON’S SHUTDOWN HAS BEEN EXTENDED FOR ANOTHER THREE WEEKS WHICH PUTS THE CODY CUBS SEASON OPENER OF APRIL 25TH IN JEOPARDY. LIKE MANY TEAMS AROUND THE STATE, THE CUBS WERE SUPPOSED TO BEGIN PRACTICE THIS WEEK. WITH THE SHUTDOWN BEING IMPLEMENTED UNTIL APRIL 19TH HEAD COACH OF THE CUBS BART GRENZ TALKS THE CURRENT STATE OF CODY BASEBALL.
“WE HAD OUR FIRST GAME SCHEDULED FOR THE END OF APRIL, FIRST OF MAY, FOR ALL THREE TEAMS. DEPENDING ON WHEN WE CAN START, THEIR’S GOING TO BE BIG DECISIONS THAT ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE MADE BETWEEN BASEBALL PROGRAMS ON WHETHER OR NOT TO PLAY THOSE GAMES… OR WHAT WE DO WITH THEM, OR HOW MANY DAYS OF PRACTICE WE SHOULD HAVE BEFORE WE GET OUT AND PLAY. KEEPING THE KIDS HEALTH IN MIND AND NOT TRYING TO HAVE TO MANY EARLY SEASON INJURIES.”
GRENZ DOES REMAIN OPTIMISTIC THEIR WILL BE A SEASON AND OUTLINES WHAT A SCHEDULE COULD LOOK LIKE.
“PERSONALLY, I DON’T THINK WE’LL PROBABLY START TILL MID MAY. IF WE FOLLOW SOME GUIDELINES AND TRY TO GO TWO, THREE WEEKS OF PRACTICE BEFORE WE DO PLAY OUR FIRST GAME. WE’RE PROBABLY NOT LOOKING AT GAMES UNTIL JUNE, YOU KNOW BEGINNING OF JUNE TO MID JUNE, THEN DEFINITELY AN ABBREVIATED SCHEDULE. WITH THE STATE TOURNAMENTS BEING MID TO LATE JULY, WE MIGHT ONLY HAVE A MONTH OF A REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE.”
DURING THE SHUTDOWN THEIR IS TO BE NO PRACTICE, NO TEAM MEETINGS, AND NO COACHES MAKING CONTACT WITH PLAYERS, SUCH AS AN INDIVIDUAL WORKOUT. COACH GRENZ ON WHAT HE’S LOOKING FOR OUT OF THE PLAYERS DURING THE SHUTDOWN.
“THE KIDS ARE ON THEIR OWN. SENT OUT A FEW E-MAILS TO THE KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON LEGION BASEBALL WISE. TOLD THEM TO TRY TO STAY ACTIVE AND IF THEY CAN, TO GO OUT AND THROW BECAUSE ONCE THE SEASON STARTS UP ARM CARE IS GOING TO BE MAYBE MY BIGGEST CONCERN.”
AS FOR WHEN THE SEASON DOES GET STARTED COACH GRENZ IS EXCITED FOR WHAT THE 2020 CODY CUBS CAN DO ON THE DIAMOND.
“WE’RE PRETTY OPTIMISTIC THAT WE’LL HAVE ANOTHER STRONG YEAR. WE SHOULD BE IN THE TOP FOUR TEAMS IN THE STATE, MAKING A RUN AT A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. WE HAVE SOME QUESTION MARKS BUT VERY OPTIMISTIC THAT WE COULD BE THERE AT THE END OF THE YEAR MAKING A RUN AT A STATE TITLE.”
