In a game between Wyoming 3A High School Football’s number 3 ranked Cody Broncs and the number 2 ranked Powell Panthers the excitement was as big as the Basin itself.
Powell came into the game with a 7-1 record with it’s lone loss the Star Valley.
Cody came into the Big Horn Brawl with the same record with their 1 lose to the same Star Valley Braves.
The winner of the annual Powell Cody game would get to host a playoff game and would end up with the number 2 seed in the Wyoming 3A Football playoffs and a cool trophy.
The Panthers won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half.
Cody with the opening drive ran 8 plays for 80 yards and a 3 yard touchdown by Junior Quarterback Maddax Ball that was set up by a 55 yard run bt Junior Grady McCarten, Broncs up 7-0 after the Connor Moss PAT.
Powell’s first possession would go 10 plays and end with a 24 yard field goal by Jhett Schwahn, Broncs up 7-3
After a quick 3 and out by the Broncs Powell got the ball on the Panthers 23 yard line, and went 77 yards in 10 plays completed by a 5 yard touchdown run by Schwan, after the missed PAT Powell was up 9-7.
With the trading of 2 possessions each Powell had the football and was driving in Cody territory, Senior Trey Schroder would intercept Powell’s Schwahn and the Broncs would take over with just over 3 minutes in the 1st half.
Cody would march 80 yards in 3 plays with passes from Ball to Chase Hatch for 20 yards, Jace Jarrett for 31 yards and a touchdown pass to Hatch for 29 yards putting the Broncs up 15-9 after a two point conversion.
The Panthers would get the ball with:24 seconds remaining in the 1st half an travel 55 yards in 4 plays resulting in a 13 yard TD pass front Schwann to Keona Wisnewski and putting Powell up 16-15 at the half.
Powell would have the ball to start the second half and would go on a 14 play drive lasting 7:48 in the 3rd quarter and would add a field goal by Schwann from 35 yards out, Powell going up 19-15 on the Broncs.
The next possession by the Broncs would see Cody go 11 plays ending in a 5 yard touchdown run by Maddax putting Cody up 22-19.
The Broncs would end the game in the Victory formation after a timely interception by Jace Jarrett, Broncs win 22-19.
Cody ran for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns, passing for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Grady McCarten had 18 carries for 173 yards in the game.
Powell had 175 yards rushing, 211 yards passing for a total of 386 yards.
Schwahn ran 14 times for 90 yards and a touchdown, while throwing for 211 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions.
Cody will host Douglas this Friday at Spike Vannoy, Powell will travel to Buffalo this Friday.
