Broncs Seniors Use Clutch Free Throws to Bury Riverton, Fillies Fall Short on Senior Day

IT WAS A DOUBLE HEADER OF HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL AS THE SENIORS OF THE BRONCS AND FILLIES, TEAGAN THOMPSON, COY NOVAKOVICH, HUNTER HAYS, JACKSON DAVIS, TRISTAN BLATT AND DUNCAN RADAKOVICH, LACED UP THEIR SNEAKERS FOR ONE FINAL TIME INSIDE THE SWEITZER GYMNASIUM, ON THEIR HOME HARDWOOD, SATURDAY AFTERNOON HOSTING RIVERTON.

PICKING THINGS UP WITH THE SECOND GAME OF THE DOUBLE HEADER WHERE THE BRONCS WERE CLUTCH FREE THROW LINE, DROPPING IN 12 IN THE FINAL QUARTER, TO HANG ON FOR THE 64-59 WIN OVER RIVERTON.

THE BRONCS CAME OUT OF THE GATES HOT AND LED 11-5 MIDWAY THROUGH THE FIRST QUARTER FORCING RIVERTON TO CALL A TIME-OUT. RETURNING TO ACTION FOLLOWING THAT QUICK STOPPAGE THE WOLVERINES WENT ON AN 11-0 RUN AND LED AT THE END OF THE FIRST QUARTER 19-16.

THE BRONCS BUCKLED DOWN DEFENSIVELY IN THE SECOND QUARTER HOLDING RIVERTON TO JUST EIGHT POINTS IN THE SECOND FRAME AND CODY WOULD HEAD INTO THE LOCKER ROOM AT HALFTIME WITH A 32-27 LEAD.

IN THE THIRD QUARTER RIVERTON CAME OUT STRONG IN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES TYING UP THE GAME BUT THE BRONCS GRABBED CONTROL LATE IN THE QUARTER AND WOULD BUILD A 10 POINT LED AFTER THREE FRAMES, 49-39.

THE BRONCS WOULD LEAD BY 11 POINTS IN THE FOURTH QUARTER BUT RIVERTON’S OFFENSE CAME ALIVE AS THE WOLVERINE’S, DAMON DEVRIES KNOCKED IN THREE OF HIS SEVEN MADE 3-POINTERS IN THE FINAL FRAME. LATE IN THE GAME RIVERTON HAD TIED THINGS UP AT 59 ALL WITH UNDER A MINUTE TO PLAY. CODY WAS ABLE TO HANG ON THANKS TO LATE FREE THROWS AND TIMELY SHOOTING AS THEY HELD ON FOR THE FIVE POINT VICTORY.

COY NOVAKOVICH AND TRISTAN BLATT LED THE WAY FOR THE BRONCS AS THEY DROPPED IN 17 POINTS EACH AND COMBINED TO GO 8-10 FROM THE FREE THROW LINE IN THE FINAL FRAME. AS A TEAM CODY WAS 25-29 FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE. HUNTER HAYS ADDED 13 POINTS AND ALL FIVE SENIORS FOR THE BRONCS SCORED. DUNCAN RADAKOVICH HAD NINE POINTS AND JACKSON DAVIS HAD THREE.

WITH THE WIN THE BRONCS FINISH THE SEASON 7-12 OVERALL, 3-3 IN LEAGUE PLAY.

UP NEXT: THE BRONCS ENTER THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT AS THE NUMBER 3 SEED OUT OF THE NORTHWEST QUADRANT AND WILL BE MATCHED-UP WITH EITHER EVANSTON OR STAR VALLEY IN THE FIRST ROUND THURSDAY.

FOR THE CODY FILLIES, SATURDAY AFTERNOON, IT WAS NOT THE OUTCOME THE FILLIES WANTED AS RIVERTON WAS ABLE TO HANG ON FOR THE 40-33 WIN SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

THE FILLIES HELD THE LEAD AFTER ONE QUARTER OF PLAY 12-9 BUT ONLY MANAGED 10 TOTAL POINTS IN THE SECOND AND THIRD QUARTERS. THEY FOUND THEMSELVES DOWN BY SEVEN HEADING INTO THE FOURTH QUARTER AND THAT WAS TO MUCH FOR THEM TO OVERCOME AS RIVERTON HELD ON FOR THE WIN.

TEAGAN THOMPSON ENDED HER FINAL GAME IN THE SWEITZER GYMNASIUM WITH FOUR TOTAL POINTS AND PLAYED SUPERB DEFENSE ALL NIGHT. KENNEDI NIEMANN LED THE TEAM WITH 11 POINTS, TORRIE SCHUTZMAN HAD 10.

WITH THE LOSS THE FILLIES FINISH THE SEASON 7-12, 0-4 IN LEAGUE PLAY.

UP NEXT: THE FILLIES ENTER THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT AS THE NUMBER 4 SEED AND WILL PLAY GREEN RIVER IN THE FIRST ROUND THURSDAY.
