Bighorn National Forest firefighters have already had their first fire encounter of 2020.
Last Sunday, May 31st, Forest staff responded to a call from the Wyoming Hotshots – a group based out of Greybull that helps Bighorn National Forest spot and respond to wildfires. The Hotshots reported a fire in Shell Canyon, near the Post Creek picnic area. Firefighters responded to the scene and quickly doused the flame, but not before it burned a tenth of an acre in the area.
In this case, the source was easy to solve but no less unsettling or irresponsible – the wildfire started from an abandoned campfire. Historically, 50% of the wildfires in Bighorn National Forest are caused by people. This one abandoned campfire could have consequences for everyone visiting this summer, as it might lead to more stringent fire restrictions if forest officials determine they’re needed. Everyone is strongly advised to make sure their fire is complete extinguished – either by water and/or dirt and stirring it until its cool enough to touch – before leaving the area.
This particular incident is under investigation. Anyone with information on who started this wildlife is asked to contact the Forest Service directly at 307-674-2600.
