73 yr old Greybull Resident Dies in Fatal Worland Car Crash

Excessive speed on a snow-covered Worland road contributed to Monday’s fatal crash which took the life of a Greybull resident who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

On April 19, 2021, a vehicle crash occurred around milepost 173 on US Highway 20 north of Worland, Wyoming. At 10:25 a.m., Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were notified of a motor vehicle collision.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol’s report, a 2001 Buick LeSabre was headed north on US Highway 20. The road was covered with slush with snow blowing across the highway.

The driver lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered road and began to fishtail while negotiating a curve to the left. In the struggle to regain control of the vehicle, the Buick crossed into the southbound lane.

When the Buick entered the southbound lane, it collided with a 2016 Volvo semi-trailer combination unit commercial truck.  The driver of the Volvo truck was unable to avoid colliding with the passenger car, striking it on the passenger side.

The driver of the Buick has been identified as 73-year-old Greybull, Wyoming resident Alvaro Serna Zamudio.

Serna Zamudio was not wearing a seatbelt when the incident occurred. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Volvo commercial truck has been identified as 68-year-old  Eugene G. Klein of Alberta, Canada. Klein was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.

In addition to road conditions, speed is being investigated as a potential contributing factor. With the weather conditions that morning, officers believe Serna Zamudio was driving faster than advisable..

This is the 26th fatality on Wyoming’s roadways in 2021 compared to 22 in 2020, 45 in 2019, and 22 in 2018 to date.
