Wyoming’s New Sheriff in Town Covered by ABC

ABC nationally covered the hiring of the first African American sheriff here in the Cowboy State and it was really cool to see how well he not only represented our state but to hear his perspective on what can be better here.

“I definitely think we have a big opportunity to not only change the way we police, the way we interact with the community, but still remain safe and provide law enforcement services to our community.”

Officer Applehans also discussed how he got into the force in the first place as that wasn’t always what he had in mind for himself.  He was a college recruiter and counselor when an officer said that he would work well as an officer.

Something Applehans remembers from that interaction is how the officer said to him that, “I can teach you the things you need to know about law enforcement but I can’t always teach everybody how to talk and interact with people.”
