Its Wyoming vs Chevron in a new series of possible violations.
The State of Wyoming and the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) filed a complaint against Chevron Corporation for violations of the Wyoming Environmental Quality Act. The thrust of the complaint is their failure to remediate contamination at several service stations and convenience stores across the state.
Chevron’s underground storage tanks leaked and disturbed the surrounding environments at the properties they owned and operated. Chevron was aware of the contamination, even making claims to its’ insurance companies. These claims were settled and Chevron collected the money, but none of it was used to clean their sites. The state ultimately had to pay the $3 million dollar bill for the job.
The Department of Environmental Quality believes the law is on their side, and wants Chevron, as the party directly responsible for the contamination, to reimburse the state for the cleaning.
There is no word on how Chevron has responded to the complaint.
