UPDATE: Suspect Dead, Park Ranger Injured In Yellowstone Shooting

One person is dead after a shooting at Canyon Village in Yellowstone National Park, park officials say.

One park ranger was injured in the incident following what has been described as a “shootout” at the Canyon Village section of the park.

“When rangers contacted the individual there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers,” park officials said in a media release.

Details of the law enforcement incident, but according to the release, the person who was armed and threatening was dead and a ranger had to be airlifted to a local hospital where they are in stable condition.

Canyon Lodge remained closed on Thursday while authorities investigate the deadly incident, but park officials assured the public and park visitors that there were no active threats.

Photos published by NPS Ranger News showed armed officers entering a dormitory used by food service employees after the incident.

In the park’s media release, it says that,  “details around this incident are under investigation.”

There is no indication that law enforcement from outside of the park was involved in the incident.
