Today, Representative Harriet Hageman (R-WY) is announcing she is backing her fellow Congressman, Jim Jordan, to be the next Speaker of the House.
With the historic ouster of Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from his role as Speaker of the House, Republicans are lining up behind two main candidates for the next leader of the House of Representatives.
House Republicans will gather Oct. 11 to hold internal elections to nominate former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s replacement. The possible successors include members of his leadership team and some top conservative allies.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, became the first candidate to say he is running, followed by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La.
Rep. Hageman says in a statement, “Jim Jordan is the definition of a solid conservative and a truly effective leader, and I am proud to publicly express my strong support for him to become the next Speaker of the House.”
Jordan, along with Hageman are part of the Freedom Caucus in the House. The Freedom Caucus, also known as the House Freedom Caucus, is a congressional caucus consisting of Republican members of the United States House of Representatives. Generally considered to be the most conservative and farthest-right bloc within the House Republican Conference, the caucus was formed in January 2015 by a group of conservatives and Tea Party movement members, with the aim of pushing the Republican leadership to the right. Its first chairperson, Jim Jordan, described the caucus as a “smaller, more cohesive, more agile and more active” group of conservative representatives.
Hageman continues in her statement, stating that her confidence in and her support of Jordan is based on beliefs. “He is a friend and true ally of our America First agenda. Jim was one of the first members of Congress to provide counsel and guidance to our campaign to take back Wyoming’s lone congressional seat. He didn’t blink, he didn’t flinch, he was in from the get-go.”
Jordan, as well as other GOP members are taking a hard-lined stand against illegal immigration, that they say the Biden Administration isn’t doing enough to stop the historic flow of people crossing our southern border illegally. According to Hageman, Jordan “allowed me to play a small part in helping craft H.R. 2, the most conservative border security bill this body has ever passed.”
Jordan, who is the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has impressed Hageman since she was elected into Congress in 2022, saying “As chairman of the Judiciary Committee, he has been a warrior, staying focused on stopping the leftist weaponization of the federal government opponents and rooting out Biden family corruption. Jim will fight against the Biden White House and Democrat controlled Senate, so that we don’t send another dollar, that should be protecting our border, to Ukraine to enrich their oligarchs.”
Hageman continues, “We desperately need a conservative leader who will fight against the growth of government, against increased government spending, and against the Swamp that controls Washington. Jim has been doing that his entire career, he will fight for our Constitutional rights, for a limited federal government, and for our America First principles. When we vote for the next Speaker, I will be supporting Jim Jordan, and I urge all my colleagues and the American people to do the same.”
Jordan, who has been a steadfast ally of the former Speaker, is also one of the leading GOP lawmakers who has led the charge on the impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden, as well as investigations of the president’s family and administration. Despite that tense background, Jordan says he’s confident that he and Biden could have a working relationship — whether trust or good faith were there or not.
“If I get the votes and get the privilege of being speaker, that’s how it works in our system,” he said. “We’ll deal with them, they’ll deal with us. That’s how it works.”
