WINTER SPORTS SEASON IS STARTING TO WIND DOWN AND FOR ONE TEAM IN CODY, WYOMING IT’S STATE TOURNAMENT TIME. THE PARK COUNTY ICE CATS, CODY’S GIRLS’ YOUTH HOCKEY TEAM, IS SET TO HOST THE 2020 GIRLS’ STATE TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND AT THE REILLY ARENA. THE ICE CATS WILL BE COMPETING FOR THE PROGRAMS SIXTH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. THE BIG HORN RADIO NETWORK CAUGHT UP WITH HEAD COACH OF THE ICE CATS ANGIE JOHNSON AS WELL AS ONE OF THE PLAYERS KAYLA KOLPITCKE, EARLIER THIS WEEK.
THE ICE CATS ARE CURRENTLY 16-2-2 ON THE SEASON AND HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A PHENOMENAL FEAT OF 100 WINS OVER THE PAST SIX SEASONS. COACH JOHNSON TOUCHES ON THAT FEAT AND EXPLAINS THE GREATNESS OF GIRLS YOUTH HOCKEY IN WYOMING.
“IT REALLY IS AMAZING. GIRLS HOCKEY IN WYOMING HAS REALLY STARTED TO DEVELOP AND OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEARS THAT I HAVE COACHED OUR GIRLS HAVE EXCELLED BEYOND MY BELIEF. I MEAN THEY ARE SO DETERMINED. THEY ARE TEAMMATES, THEY HAVE TRUST IN EACH OTHER AND THEY’RE VERY POSITIVE. I THINK THAT IS PART OF OUR SUCCESS, IS JUST THAT TEAM AND THE LOVE OF THE GAME.”
ONE OF THE ICE CATS PLAYERS KALYA KOLPITCKE HAS BEEN WITH THE TEAM FOR YEARS, PLAYING ON SEVERAL OF THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS. SHE GOES ON TO TALK ABOUT HER ROLE ON THE TEAM.
“I AM THE GOALIE AND I HAVE BEEN WITH THE ICE CATS FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW. WE DO DRY LAND EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY AND WE HAVE PRACTICE EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY WHERE WE DO CONDITIONING AND ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT DRILLS. ONE OF OUR BIG FOCUSES THIS YEAR IS BEING POSITIVE ON AND OFF THE ICE.”
THE PARK COUNTY ICE CATS GIRLS YOUTH HOCKEY TEAM GOES FOR THE PROGRAMS SIXTH TITLE, THIS WEEKEND, WITH ALL THE ACTION GETTING UNDERWAY FRIDAY AT 1:30 IN THE AFTERNOON AT THE REILLY ARENA. THEY WILL PLAY AGAIN SATURDAY AT BOTH 11:15AM AND 7:15PM. THEIR WILL BE A FREE SKATE WITH THE ICE CATS AFTER SATURDAY MORNINGS CONTEST.
