W.Y.D.O.T. road crews are clearing a section of U.S. Highway 14/16/20 – about three miles east of the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park – after a large mudslide blocked the road overnight.
The mudslide – approximately 300 yards long and three feet deep – occurred around approximately 9:20 p.m. Tuesday. An alert announcing the temporary closure of the highway was sent via the Yellowstone road alerts phone list.
At approximately 7:05 a.m., Yellowstone announced the highway had reopened.
The slide occurred in an area where it’s difficult to communicate via phone or radio. Because of this, there was some confusion as to the severity of the mudslide and the timeframe to reopen the road.
W.Y.D.O.T. Public Relations Specialist Cody Beers has confirmed that – as of 8:00 a.m. – U.S. Highway 14/16/20 is open but restricted to one-lane traffic. It will take most of today and possibly part of tomorrow to clear the highway fully.
Travel between Cody and Yellowstone National Park is possible, although drivers can expect delays while W.Y.D.O.T. works to clear the road.
