The Lady Warrior “Playing For Hope” game would be played in front of the largest crowd of the season. Covid restrictions were partially lifted and 500 spectators would be able to attend.
Worland last lost on January 28th in Lander. It would be their largest loss, and least amount of points scored in a game.
Lander would come to Worland with a Conference 3-0 record and 12-2 overall and the number two ranking in Wyoming 3A girls basketball. The Lady Warriors had moved up to 5th with their 5 game win streak.
The Lady Warriors would come out with a 13 point first period with scoring provided by Darla Hernandez and her six points. Denali Jones had four, and Brooke Wright added a three pointer in the first shot of the game.
Lander scored 8 points with Whitney Hanson being their leading scorer with four points. 13-8 first period Lady Warrior lead.
Denali and Darla would continue to be the scoring light for the Lady Warriors. They would combine to score the total points in the second period. Defensively Worland would hold the Lady Tiger’s leading scorer to 2 points in the first half. 20-13 Halftime lead for Worland.
Again the third period would have Denali and Darla carrying the heaviest part of the scoring load. Each of the girls hit from beyond the arch. Megan Winfield was the scoring threat for Lander. She had 10 points at the end of the third period. A fourteen point Lady Warrior lead to end the third. 34-20.
The Lady Tigers began to show why they were ranked number two. Lander held Worland to 2 points in the final period. Free throws from Denali and Brooke Wright. Lander would score 14 points in the final period.
Worland was able to hold on and get the win 36-34. Denali and Darla both had 14 points. Brooke Wright would have 6 and Tymberlynn Crippen had 2 points. Megan Winfield ended with 13points including three 3 pointers.
