THE CODY FILLIES VOLLEYBALL TEAM IS BACK IN THE GYM FOLLOWING A 2018 CAMPAIGN THAT SAW THEM FINISH THIRD AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT. AND WHILE THE SEASON IS JUST BEGINNING THIS TEAM ALREADY HAS THEIR EYES SET ON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. HEAD COACH OF THE FILLIES STEPHANIE BIRCH TALKS ABOUT HOW THIS YEAR’S TEAM BUILDS OFF OF LAST YEARS SUCCESS.
“WE HAVE THAT CONVERSATION ALL THE TIME. AND THE LEADERS WE HAVE BACK, WE HAVE RILEY WELSH THAT WAS A HUGE PART OF THAT, WE HAVE THOSE KIDS TALK TO THESE KIDS ABOUT IT. ‘HEY REMEMBER LAST YEAR WHEN WE DID THIS? OR WE NEED TO DO THIS SO WE CAN GET BACK TO THAT.’ AND THEN THEY TIE THOSE GOALS BACK TO OUR MAIN GOAL WHICH IS GETTING BACK TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT.”
WHILE THE FOCUS ON RETURNING TO STATE IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THIS TEAM THEY ARE TAKING THINGS ONE DAY AT A TIME.
“WE JUST SET LITTLE GOALS LIKE WE WANT TO PASS A SERVE PERCENTAGE, WE WANT TO LIMIT OUR ERRORS TO A CERTAIN NUMBER. SO WE TRY TO BREAK DOWN THOSE BIG GOALS BY THESE LITTLE ONES.”
AND WITH JUST A FEW PRACTICES UNDER THEIR BELTS COACH BIRCH HAS ALREADY IDENTIFIED A WEAKNESS THIS TEAM MUST OVERCOME.
“THAT’D BE OUR MIDDLE HITTERS. THEY ARE GOING TO BE THE ONES THAT ARE GOING TO MAKE OR BREAK IT. WE NEED SOME GIRLS TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THAT POSITION AND LET US RIDE IT.”
THE CODY FILLIES OPEN THEIR SEASON AUGUST 30TH AND 31ST WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO RIVERTON FOR THE MCDONALD’S TOURNAMENT. THEIR FIRST HOME MATCH OF THE YEAR IS SEPTEMBER 6TH AND 7TH. STAY TUNED TO THE BIG HORN RADIO NETWORK FOR UPDATES AND RESULTS THROUGH THE FALL.
